Logistics in Saudi Arabia runs on roads. Whether you sell online from Riyadh, supply supermarkets in Jeddah or deliver building materials to a site in Dammam, your goods will almost certainly spend part of their journey on a truck. This guide walks shippers through the main road freight corridors, the rules worth knowing and how to choose and book the right truck.

Why road freight leads logistics in Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom is vast, and its major cities sit hundreds of kilometres apart, linked by a long-established highway network. Seaports, airports and today's rail lines all rely on trucks for the first and last mile.

That is why road freight carries most domestic cargo. Trucks go door to door, leave when the shipper is ready and come in every size, from a pickup for a few boxes to a trailer (تريلا) for heavy loads. For small and medium businesses the workhorse in between is the Dyna, the everyday Saudi name for a light truck, after the Toyota Dyna model.

The main road freight corridors

Most cargo transport in the Kingdom moves along a handful of corridors worth knowing when you plan timings and choose a vehicle.

CorridorApproximate road distanceTypical cargo
Riyadh – Jeddahabout 950 kmRetail and e-commerce stock, Jeddah port imports
Riyadh – Dammam / Eastern Provinceabout 400 kmIndustrial supplies, consumer goods, Gulf port imports
Riyadh – Qassim (Buraidah, Unaizah)about 350 km to BuraidahDates and farm produce, food distribution, building materials
Jeddah – Makkah and Madinahabout 80 km and about 420 kmFood, hospitality supplies, seasonal pilgrimage demand
South (Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan)Long haul from Riyadh or JeddahRetail restock, food, construction materials
North (Hail, Tabuk)Long haul from Riyadh or QassimRetail stock, project materials, farm produce

Riyadh – Jeddah and Riyadh – Dammam

The Riyadh–Jeddah link is the backbone of national distribution; at about 950 km it is a long day on the road, so book early. A full Dyna Dry 5T currently costs from SAR 2,216 including VAT, and the Riyadh to Jeddah Dyna page has more detail. The shorter Riyadh–Dammam corridor suits regular replenishment runs to the Eastern Province, at from SAR 1,027 for a full Dyna.

Qassim, the south and the north

Qassim is a farming and food-distribution hub; a Dyna from Riyadh to Buraidah currently costs from SAR 852. Southern routes to Abha and Jazan include mountain roads, and northern routes to Hail and Tabuk are long, so allow extra time.

Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy

Vision 2030 places logistics at the heart of economic diversification. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy aims to make the Kingdom a global logistics hub linking Asia, Europe and Africa, with investment in ports, airports, rail, logistics zones and digital services.

One headline project is the Saudi Landbridge, a planned rail link between Jeddah and Dammam via Riyadh; follow official announcements for its timeline. Even as rail grows, trucks will still handle collection, final delivery and most short and medium trips. For logistics in Saudi Arabia, the changes shippers already feel are more digital paperwork and a stronger emphasis on licensed carriers.

Regulation basics for shippers

Rules change, so treat this as an overview and check the current requirements before you ship.

Transport General Authority (TGA)

The Transport General Authority (الهيئة العامة للنقل) regulates road freight in the Kingdom, including the licensing of freight transport activities. When you hire a carrier or broker, ask whether it is licensed for the work.

Bayan electronic waybill

Bayan (منصة بيان) is TGA's electronic waybill platform. At the time of writing, road freight trips are expected to be documented with an electronic waybill linking the shipper, carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo. Agree with your carrier who issues the waybill for each trip and keep the reference with your records.

VAT, e-invoicing and city restrictions

Domestic freight services are generally subject to 15% VAT, and VAT-registered businesses issue electronic invoices under ZATCA's e-invoicing system (فاتورة). Ask for a proper tax invoice so you can reclaim input VAT where eligible. Many cities also restrict truck entry on certain roads or at peak hours, so check the local municipal rules and agree a delivery window with the receiver.

FTL, LTL or reefer: choosing the right freight service

ServiceBest forHow it is pricedKeep in mind
Full truckload (FTL)Full or bulky loads, fragile goods, fixed pickup timesThe whole truck, by distance or a fixed lane priceYou pay for the whole truck even if it is half empty
Part load (LTL)Cartons, pallets and shipments up to 3,000 kgYour chargeable weight on a shared truckWider pickup and delivery windows
Refrigerated (reefer)Food, dairy, produce and other temperature-sensitive goodsThe whole refrigerated truckPre-cooling, temperature records and SFDA requirements

Full truckload gives you the whole Dyna, one pickup, one drop and the most control over timing. With a part load you pay only for the space your shipment uses, because it is consolidated with other shipments on the same lane. Chargeable weight is the higher of the actual weight and the volume weight at 250 kg per cubic metre, so 2 cubic metres of light cartons weighing 300 kg are charged as 500 kg.

Sending 500 kg of dry cartons from Riyadh to Dammam as a part load currently costs from SAR 166, against from SAR 1,027 for the whole truck. Our FTL vs LTL guide goes deeper.

For temperature-sensitive goods, a reefer keeps cargo chilled at +2 to +8 °C or frozen down to −18 °C. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) sets requirements for temperature-controlled food transport, so check them for your product. See our refrigerated truck transport guide.

Digital booking vs phone-and-WhatsApp brokering

Many shippers still find trucks by calling a broker or posting in a WhatsApp group. It works, but quotes change from call to call, details get lost in chat threads and responsibility for the trip is not always clear.

Online truck booking puts the key facts in one place:

  • Price: an instant quote including VAT before you confirm.
  • Details: addresses, map pins, cargo and pickup time recorded in the booking, not in voice notes.
  • Reference: a booking number and a tracking page you can share with your customer.
  • Changes: online cancellation under clear rules, without chasing anyone by phone.

For routine Dyna moves within and between cities, digital booking is usually faster and easier to audit; phone brokering still suits unusual cargo.

A shipper checklist before you book

  1. Weigh and measure your cargo, including pallets and packaging.
  2. Choose the service: FTL, LTL or reefer, based on size, urgency and temperature.
  3. Confirm both addresses and drop accurate map pins.
  4. Check access: truck entry hours, gate passes and space to park and load.
  5. Pack for the road with stretch wrap, sturdy cartons and labels with the receiver's name and phone.
  6. Prepare documents such as a delivery note, and agree who issues the Bayan waybill.
  7. Arrange people to load at pickup and unload at delivery.
  8. Keep records: booking reference, tax invoice and proof of delivery.
Tip: book early-morning pickups a day ahead to load before traffic builds.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Bayan waybill for road freight?

At the time of writing, road freight trips in the Kingdom are expected to be documented through Bayan, the Transport General Authority's electronic waybill platform. It is typically issued by the licensed transport company or broker, but responsibilities can vary. Before each trip, agree who issues the waybill, keep the reference with your records and check TGA's current rules, which are updated from time to time.

How is a part-load (LTL) shipment priced on WusoolX?

Part loads are priced on chargeable weight, which is the higher of the actual weight and the volume weight at 250 kg per cubic metre. A minimum charge applies to each shipment, and part loads can be up to 3,000 kg; heavier cargo should go as a full truck. Because shipments are consolidated on the same lane, pickup and delivery windows are wider than for a full truck.

Can I ship chilled or frozen food between Saudi cities?

Yes. A refrigerated Dyna keeps cargo chilled at +2 to +8 °C or frozen down to −18 °C, and smaller chilled consignments can travel as a part load in the Chilled class. Pre-cool your products before loading, keep doors closed during handling and check the Saudi Food and Drug Authority's current requirements for temperature-controlled food transport.

What does the WusoolX price include?

The price shown before you confirm includes 15% VAT. A full-truck price is a base fare plus a per-kilometre rate for the road distance, with a minimum fare; popular city pairs have fixed lane prices. Part loads are priced on chargeable weight with a minimum charge. Pay cash to the driver or by bank transfer, and cancel free online until a driver is assigned.
