LTL Part Load Shipping in Saudi Arabia: Complete Guide

Shipping a few pallets, not a whole truck? Learn how LTL part load shipping works in Saudi Arabia, how chargeable weight is calculated and how to book a shared Dyna.

Not every order fills a truck. If you are moving a few pallets of stock from Riyadh to Dammam or restocking a branch in Jeddah, LTL part load shipping in Saudi Arabia lets you pay only for the space your goods use on a shared Dyna instead of hiring the whole vehicle. This guide covers chargeable weight, packing, transit times and how to book a part load online with WusoolX.

What is LTL part load shipping?

LTL stands for less-than-truckload. Instead of one customer booking an entire truck, several shipments on the same lane are consolidated onto one vehicle, and each shipper pays only for their share of the space and weight.

You will hear the same idea called part load, shared truck, consolidated freight or groupage. On WusoolX it is simply Part load (LTL), and it sits alongside Full truck (FTL), where the whole Dyna is reserved for you. If you are still weighing the two, our guide to FTL vs LTL: which to choose walks through the trade-offs.

Who LTL shipping suits in Saudi Arabia

Part load shipping works best when a consignment is too big for a parcel courier but far too small to justify a full truck. Typical users include:

  • SMEs and wholesalers sending a few pallets to a customer in another city.
  • E-commerce sellers restocking a regional storeroom between larger replenishments.
  • Retail and pharmacy chains topping up branches with cartons that would never fill a Dyna.
  • Procurement teams moving small B2B orders or spare parts between sites.
  • Food distributors shipping smaller chilled consignments on a regular schedule.

How chargeable weight and volume weight work

A truck can run out of room long before it runs out of payload, so LTL pricing charges light but bulky goods for the space they take up. That is why part loads use a chargeable weight.

On WusoolX, chargeable weight is the higher of:

  1. Actual weight: what the shipment weighs, in kilograms.
  2. Volume weight: the shipment's volume in cubic metres multiplied by 250 kg per cubic metre.

To find the volume, multiply length × width × height in metres for each package or pallet, then add them together. A minimum charge per shipment applies, so very small consignments are billed at that minimum.

Worked example

Say you are sending two pallets of packaged household goods from Riyadh to Dammam. Each pallet is 1.2 m long, 1.0 m wide and 1.5 m high, and weighs 300 kg.

  • Volume per pallet: 1.2 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 1.8 m³
  • Total volume: 2 × 1.8 = 3.6 m³
  • Volume weight: 3.6 × 250 = 900 kg
  • Actual weight: 2 × 300 = 600 kg
  • Chargeable weight: 900 kg, because the volume weight is higher

The same logic for three different shipments:

ShipmentActual weightTotal volumeVolume weightChargeable weight
2 pallets of light cartons (1.2 × 1.0 × 1.5 m each)600 kg3.6 m³900 kg900 kg
2 pallets of dense goods (1.2 × 1.0 × 1.0 m each)1,400 kg2.4 m³600 kg1,400 kg
10 loose cartons (0.6 × 0.4 × 0.4 m each)150 kg0.96 m³240 kg240 kg

For reference, a 500 kg dry part load on the Riyadh to Dammam lane, about 400 km, is from SAR 166, and a 900 kg dry part load on the same lane is from SAR 298, VAT included.

Tip: measure the packed pallet including the pallet base and any overhang, not just the cartons.

Packing, palletising and labelling for a shared truck

On a shared truck your goods travel beside other shipments and may be handled more than once. Good packing protects your stock and keeps the volume weight down.

Packing and palletising tips

  • Palletise whenever you can. A stable pallet is quicker and safer to load than loose cartons.
  • Keep cartons inside the pallet edge. Overhang gets crushed and adds to the measured volume.
  • Put heavy items at the bottom and build even, interlocking layers.
  • Stretch-wrap tightly and use corner boards or straps for tall loads.
  • Avoid half-empty cartons. Void space collapses under weight, so fill gaps with dunnage.

Labelling checklist

Every package or pallet should carry a clear label showing:

  • Your WusoolX booking reference (for example WX-XXXX-XXXX)
  • Sender and receiver names, cities and phone numbers
  • Piece count, such as "Pallet 1 of 2"
  • Handling marks where relevant: fragile, this way up, do not stack, keep chilled

Keep your commercial paperwork ready too, such as the delivery note and a ZATCA-compliant tax invoice. Road freight in the Kingdom is regulated by the Transport General Authority (TGA), and electronic waybills for cargo trips are issued through Bayan, TGA's waybill platform. Requirements can change, so check the current rules for your goods at the time of shipping.

Transit expectations: why consolidated freight needs wider windows

The trade-off for a lower price is flexibility. A shared truck collects several shipments heading the same way, so pickup and delivery windows are wider than with a dedicated truck. After you book, the WusoolX team confirms your pickup window.

To keep things moving, book ahead of your deadline, have the goods packed and labelled when the window opens, and tell the receiver to expect the delivery. If your shipment must leave at an exact time or arrive in a fixed slot, a full truck is usually the better fit.

Dry vs chilled part loads

WusoolX offers two LTL classes:

ClassTypical goodsNotes
DryPackaged goods, retail stock, spare parts, building supplies, stationeryClosed-box Dyna for general cargo
ChilledDairy, fresh produce, beverages, chilled foods and other temperature-sensitive productsTravels refrigerated, priced on the same chargeable-weight basis

A 300 kg chilled part load from Riyadh to Jeddah, for example, is from SAR 262. If your products must stay frozen, or you need a dedicated truck with its own temperature setting, book a full Dyna Reefer 5T instead. Our guide to refrigerated truck transport in Saudi Arabia covers cold chain planning in detail.

When to switch from LTL to a full truck

Switch to a full truck in these cases:

  • Over 3,000 kg. LTL shipments on WusoolX go up to 3,000 kg; heavier loads should be booked as a full truck.
  • The prices get close. On Riyadh–Jeddah, about 950 km, a 2,500 kg dry part load is from SAR 1,454 while a full Dyna Dry 5T is from SAR 2,216.
  • Time-critical deliveries that need a fixed pickup time or a direct run.
  • Fragile or high-value cargo that you would rather not have handled alongside other shipments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between LTL and FTL shipping?

With FTL (full truckload) you book the whole Dyna and pay for the entire vehicle. With LTL (less-than-truckload), your shipment shares a truck with other consignments on the same lane and you pay only for your share, based on chargeable weight. LTL is usually cheaper for small loads; FTL gives more control over timing.

How is chargeable weight calculated for a part load?

Chargeable weight is the higher of the actual weight and the volume weight. For the volume weight, multiply length × width × height in metres for each piece, add the volumes and multiply by 250 kg per cubic metre. A minimum charge applies per shipment, so very small consignments are billed at that minimum.

What is the maximum weight for an LTL shipment?

On WusoolX, a part load shipment can weigh up to 3,000 kg. If your goods weigh more than that, book a full truck such as the Dyna Dry 5T or Dyna Dry 6T instead. When you are close to the limit, compare both prices, because a full truck can be better value for heavy or bulky loads.

How long does LTL delivery take in Saudi Arabia?

Transit depends on the lane, the distance and how shipments are consolidated, so part loads have wider pickup and delivery windows than a dedicated truck. After you book, the WusoolX team confirms your pickup window. If your goods must move at a fixed time, a full truck is the more predictable option.

Can I ship chilled goods as a part load?

Yes. WusoolX offers a Chilled LTL class for goods such as dairy, fresh produce and chilled foods, priced by chargeable weight like dry part loads. For frozen products, or a dedicated truck with its own temperature setting, book a full Dyna Reefer 5T, which runs chilled at +2 to +8 °C or frozen down to −18 °C.

Do I need to palletise my goods for LTL?

It is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended. Pallets are faster and safer to load, protect your cartons during consolidation and make dimensions easier to measure. If you ship loose cartons, use strong boxes, fill empty space and label every piece with the booking reference and piece count.
